They have the same properties as natural diamonds, the only difference is that they are grown in a lab, whereas natural diamonds are formed in the earth. Synthetic diamonds are alternatives to natural and lab-made diamonds. Today, there has been an exponential rise in the popularity of lab-grown gemstones, and it goes beyond just being pretty jewelry stuff. Millions of people today use these shiny and glossy gemstones for sale to help themselves lead a relaxed and balanced life.

Gemstone buying is a very personal experience. You definitely want to make it memorable for the rest of your life. So, there are few things you need to keep in mind while buying lab-created diamonds and other gemstones.

Check the hue, saturation and color of the stone

Synthetic gemstones are made by man in a laboratory artificially. The differentiative factor between a natural gemstone and a lab-grown gemstone have their own chemical, physical and optical properties. Three factors you need to keep in mind- hue, tone and saturation.

  • Hue: Hue is the attribute we are describing when we speak of red, yellow, green, blue, purple, and other hues intermediate to adjacent pairs in this series.
  • Tone: Tone describes how dark or light the color is, and GIA uses seven tone levels to describe colored stones, from very light through very dark.
  • Saturation: To assess saturation of the lab-created diamonds, first note whether the color of the stone falls in the warm (yellows, oranges, reds) or cool (purples, blues, greens) color family. For warm-colored stones, look for brownness.

Take shape and cut seriously

Cutting gemstones is a process by which rough crystal is turned into the polished, transparent, and brilliant gemstones. Lab-created diamonds and other synthetic gemstones are valued based on their shape and precise cut. While some cut names may describe the face-up shape of the finished gem, others refer to the shape and arrangement of the gem’s facets.
